Orange Julius Popsicles

Sometimes a particular food has the ability to transport you to a memory of a past experience. That is one of the reasons I love food. The look, taste, smell and texture of something can capture an entire moment or period in one's life, and take you back to it for a brief second.

These Orange Julius Popsicles have such an effect on me.

When I was a really young child, summer days were filled with simple joys, like getting to play outside with my brothers wearing just our diapers (or better yet, completely naked!), or dousing ourselves with refreshing water from the garden hose, or setting up a tent and camping in our backyard underneath the starry night. During the warm months, my mother would often hand us a homemade juice popsicle, encouraging us to eat it outside in the heat of the day. The popsicles cooled our young tongues, and dripped onto the concrete ground unless we were quick about eating them. It was a snapshot of young contentment.

These popsicles, full of creamy orange and a hint of sweetness, are created from the American classic, the Orange Julius. If you don't have popsicle molds, small paper cups can easily serve as a substitute - just cover each cup with aluminum foil, and put popsicle stick through the foil so it stays up. Simple and delicious, they are a hit with kids and adults alike, and a perfect reminder of childhood summers.

Orange Julius Popsicles

1 cup of orange juice
1/2 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 tablespoon sugar

In a mixing bowl or blender, combine all ingredients together. Pour into popsicle molds or paper cups, and put a popsicle stick into each. Freeze for at least 6 hours. Makes 4 popsicles.
